Change in Plans for December 6, 2011 meeting

Fellow thre-dimensionoids,

On Tuesday December 6 we will not be meeting at the Guild Building. Instead, the group will meet at the Arizona Artist Alliance Gallery in Scottsdale at 7 P.M. for a special presentation by Sculptor Hal Stewart.

Hal has just completed his monumental sculpture “Pima Basket Carrier” and will be delivering it to the gallery. This is to get ready for the presentation of the full sculpture to the clients who will install her at the entry of the SRP-MIC casinos on Indian Bend.

Hal wrote this narrative on how the piece came to be:

"Several years ago, probably about 2004, the City of Scottsdale asked for artists suggestions for a new sculpture monument at West World. I wanted to do a monument incorporating the Salt River Pima Community. I contact the SRP-MIC and met with several tribal officials including Shane Anton, Thomas Jackson, Steve Hoza, Kelly Washington, and one other person. I wanted some pictures of a Pima farmer to add that individual to my monument.

"The tribal members suggested that instead of a Pima farmer, I might want to consider a Pima basket carrier – much easier to recognize. Returning to my studio, I finished the small piece. I included a Pima basket carrier, a cowgirl, and a business man emerging from a tall pyramid.

"The City of Scottsdale eventually abandoned the project and my model sat in my studio for many years, gathering dust. One day, driving through the Salt River reservation, the thought struck me that I should finish the Pima basket carrier as I had not seen anything similar to her.

"In November 2009 I had the small model of the Pima Basket Carrier casted in bronze. She stands 23 inches tall. Because of the success of the small 23” Pima Basket Carrier, I felt it was time to make a life-size Pima Basket Carrier.

"This life-size Pima Basket Carrier woman shows pride and dignity. She has the sweet gentle face of a grandmother yet she is strong and resilient. It is my belief that this life-size figure (9 feet to the tip of her poles) will enhance the beautiful entrances to the two casinos located on the SRP-MIC or their tribal headquarters. She should be presented atop a 3 feet tall river boulder wall.

"This is the first life-size piece I have done and I am proud of the outcome. I’ve lived in this Valley for 43 years and am familiar with the Salt River Community. I hope they like my work."

Hal will be describing his techniques on sculpting this monumental piece; how he takes it from a maquette to a large piece; how an artist has to do to apply for the large commission. And then he will show us how he would assemble it at the final resting place.

In addition to Hal's presentation, we'll be having our usual peer critique, so bring your works to discuss, whether finished, in-progress, in-concept or photographed.

We will also have a round-table discusion on the topic "Sexuality/sensuality--how to portray it and how much is too much?"

Please join us at the Arizona Art Alliance Gallery on Tuesday night, December 6th, at 7 P.M. at 9011 E. Indian Bend in Scottsdale, AZ. It is located on the south side of the road, just west of the 101 and Indian Bend. I'll be driving from northern Peoria, so if anyone would like to meet me at the Guild Building and carpool to Scottsdale, just drop me an e-mail.

Sculpture Class with Peter Rubino

The following was passed on by Mark Cohen.

Taun Olsen has arranged for Peter Rubino to give a 3-day figurative sculpture class in his studio (Shea near 130 St) Oct 15-17. So far, there are only 5 signed up. Peter will do the class for 6 or more. I've taken 3 classes with Peter at the Scottsdale Artists School, and I can't say enough good things about them. The opportunity to be in a small class (6 or 7) will be fantastic. I've been in classes with 6, 12 and 15, and the individual attention in the small group is hard to match. For more information, Taun's number is 602-3989.

David L Bradley Art Exhibit at Eye Lounge

I want to invite everyone to my upcoming exhibitions at the Eye Lounge in Phoenix. September 16-October 15. Eye Lounge is located at 419 E Roosevelt, and is part of the First Friday gallery walk in Phoenix.
I will have two exhibits in the gallery. In the west gallery I will display six multimedia sculptures of well known figures who have ascended to the level of earthly gods. The title of that exhibit is Vox Populi-The People Have Spoken. In the Project room at the rear of the Eye Lounge building I will show a narrative drawing of two near death experiences I had 30 years ago. The drawing will be on all four walls of the gallery room.

On the First Friday in October, the 7th, I will perform with Brett Reed, percussionist, a multi sensory collaborative performance involving wet clay, and big sounds. This performance will take place at 7pm in the lot adjacent to the Eye Lounge.
Thanks,
David

Bisbee Rolling Art Transport Society (B.R.A.T.S.)

Here is an invitation extended to the Sculpture Group from the B.R.A.T.S. (Bisbee Rolling Art Tranpsort Society). Come to Bisbee and get out of the extreme heat for the 4th of July and see these wonderfully creative art car creations roll down Main Street! It will take place during the parade on Main Street. The event is a historical nod to the annual coaster races and integrates the Arts community that Bisbee is well-known for. The coaster races have been run since the 1920s, and used to begin at the top of the Mule Mountains . . . needless to say, many grown men were injured and even killed coasting down the winding road at break-neck speeds. Today's coaster races are really more like a parade. The B.R.A.T.S. havve been around for the last 3 years, and interject a lot of fun into the coaster races. See some of the coasters from last year in the video below:

Poe and Andrew (the two artists that organize the annual event) wish to have participation from Phoenix artists. Perhaps the Sculpture Group can build a B.R.A.T.S. car for next year's race . . . what do you think? Or, it would be great if individual artists each built cars too. The carts are basic (not built for speed), most with pedal mechanisms that start and stop like bikes. They encourage repurposing materials, and have a $250 spending limit per car. Should you not want to build your own frame, the B.R.A.T.S. have frames that can be rented for $100. Also, they are working on getting a studio that is accessible for others to work on/make last-minute fixes to Art Cars prior to the event for next year.  "Like" the B.R.A.T.S. on Facebook for the most up-to-date info. You can also call/e-mail me (Heather Green 602.430.2390 or heathergreenstudios@gmail.com) to get info on how to contact the B.R.A.T.S.

In the meantime, there are lots of great places to stay in Bisbee. I just took a tour of Gym Club Suites (the old YMCA) -- they offer suites for around $100/night (each has a full kitchen, lofts, great views of Bisbee from windows and decks, etc.). Canyon Rose Suites is also a nice place to stay (above my studio, in the same building). Click on the links and/or go to http://www.discoverbisbee.com/ for more info. The Bisbee Enclave has great info on their weekly calendar for events around town too. Regardless, if you are visiting Bisbee, please let me know, I'd love to meet up!  -- Heather

Upcoming Sculptors Group Field Trip

Fellow adventurers in the third dimension,

Mark your calendar now for a very special field trip in September. Mark Cohen has arranged for us to visit with sculptress Heloise Cristo at Taliesin on Saturday morning September 10.

Heloise Cristo, in addition to being a long-time member of Frank Lloyd Wright's close circle of friends, is an artistic national treasure, so this visit will be very special.

I hope you'll be able to join us.

Summer Assignment

Hey, 3-dimensionoids,

After the last meeting, the what-are-we-going-to-do-now committee got together and decided that our first meeting in the Fall should include a “First Annual Merkel-Fish Derby”.   Create a found-object fish over the summer and bring it to the Sculptors’ Group meeting on September 6th.  While you’re at the beach, collect flotsam, jetsam and used syringes.  If you vacation in the mountains, collect seed pods, pine cones and power-bar wrappers.  If you’re stuck in the city, forage through your neighbors trash for discarded CDs, kitchen implements and Chinese take-out chopsticks.  Then assemble your goodies into a fish sculpture.  There are only three requirements; (1) it has to fit through the door, (2) it has to be safe, and (3) it can’t be like anyone else’ s Merkel-Fish.    David Bradley has kindly volunteered to volunteer our own dear Merkel McLendon (who, by the way, missed the last meeting and is therefore the butt of this event) to judge the entries.  The winning sculptures will be displayed at the Guild throughout the month of September.

great deal on an anatomy book

Figural types,

When I was in Barnes and Noble yesterday (the one at the intersection of Route 17 and Happy Valley Road) I saw that they had three copies of Cyclopedia Anatomicae by Feher and Szunyoghy on the clearance shelves marked down to $7.45. I think the original price on this book was about $45. I bought mine at $15 and have used it extensively. It's all detailed black and white drawings (over 1,500) of bones and muscles--and not just human. There are 160 pages on humans (I used those for "Abby"), 118 pages on horses (using those now for "trois"), 29 pages on dogs, 18 pages on cats, 18 on pigs, 22 pages on sheep (I used those for "grazing rights"), and 15 to 20 pages each on apes, bears, deer, cows, camel (now there's one you don't see every day) and lions.

This is a great book at a rock-bottom price. The way that Barnes and Noble works is that you can walk into any store and tell them that the book is available for $7.45 at the West Happy Valley Road store and that you'd like to purchase it for that price. They may grump a little, but you should be able to get it at that price.

client loking for bronze sculptor

Hey, all you bronze-heads. I received this e-mail from Jason Horejs at xanadu gallery today. If you're interested, the contact information is given.

My gallery director, Elaine just had some collectors in the gallery who are looking for a 25th wedding anniversary gift for their son & daughter-in-law. They would like a table-top size, traditional style bronze sculpture of a couple that would commemorate the anniversary. They were not interested in contemporary or abstracted figures. Price range is $2,500-$3,000.

We didn’t have anything in the gallery that fit their needs so I thought I would put the call out – if you don’t have something but know another artist who might, please feel free to pass this on.

If you have something that might be appropriate please email Elaine with images and details at Elaine@xanadugallery.com

May 3 2011 meeting

Our next meeting will take place at Ball Consulting at 7pm. They will be open at 6 to allow for a little pre-meeting shopping.
Ball Consulting
Suppliers for Mold Making and Life Casting products
4665 S. Ash, Suite G 15
Tempe, AZ

Nikki at Ball Consulting will demonstrate how to take a mold of a hand and cast it in plaster.  She will also show us how to mold the casting into flexible rubber with Forton MG and urethane plastics.

From those molds, she will then demonstrate the Cold Cast process with both FMG and with urethane.

The hand mold is not only good for sculptors, but good for people who draw and paint as they can make their own hand references.

At our last meeting Carol Ruff Franzia shared with us her process for creating figures and animals using plasticene. She brought in a larger than life size rooster she was working on, as well as some bronze door knockers.

After her presentation the group turned to a discussion of Where do Ideas come from? I believe that ideas come from a quest to understand those concepts and issues the artist believes are important. Merkel gets his best ideas from great music and movies. Matt related that his best ideas come from stirring photos of humanity at the breaking point. Betsy gets her best ideas from emotionally powerful books she has read.Mark gets his ideas from the intricate patterns in nature such as fragments of a skeleton.
Betsy Aguirre
The meeting concluded with members sharing works in a critique. Mark Whoerle showed a ceramic sculpture of birds stacked one on top of the other. John Swauger showed a welded steel mule team pulling a wagon inspired by the Tumbleweeds comic. Merkel Mclendon shared one of his found object fish. Betsy Aguirre brought two pieces for feedback. One was a ceramic bas relief and the other was a 3d sculpture of a crouching female. Jerry Gabel showed a plaster, resin sculpture titled Blue Heron at Rest. I showed another one of my ceramic figure drums, and Matt Werner impressed everyone with his carved sculpture inspired by the works of Georgia Okeefe. His butternut rams head mounted on a burl was amazing for its intricacy of shape and marriage of idea and material.

3D Printers

I saw this article on using new technology (3D printer and Kinect) to turn tourists poses into small sculptures instantly and thought it was interesting.

Russian Ceramic Artist's Website

Here is a link to a website recommended to me by one of my ceramic students at PVCC. Don't be put off by it being in Russian. If you use Google Chrome as your web browser it will translate the pages for you into English or whatever language you want. The artist's name is Alexander Poverin and he makes a wide variety of ceramic objects including traditional Russian folk type pottery, but also very beautiful ceramic figurative sculptures. Let me know what you think!

HARVEY BREAM: SCULPTOR

Harvey Bream was born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota, and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in architecture and minors in speech and art. He spent 38 years as an architect designing and building custom homes in the Greater St. Paul area. When he retired at age 58, he elected to turn his architectural focus to the pursuit of art, working primarily in stone and steel. After 3 years of being mentored in a private studio by Karen Sontag, Minneapolis stone sculptor, he opened his own studio in St. Paul, MN. He continued carving stone and working with other materials including steel, wood, and paints.
When he moved to Arizona in 1995, he enrolled in the Art Department of the Scottsdale Community College and has been working there for over 15 years. He has combined metal and stone in his sculpture and has found the possibilities to be endless.
Harvey and his wife live in Scottsdale and have a summer home in Pine. He has working studios at both homes. His work is on display at his Scottsdale home, studio, and sculpture garden. He is a juried member of the Arizona Artists Guild and the Sonoran Art League, and he has shown his work in various public shows and numerous other shows and exhibits including Shemer Art Center and Sky Harbor Airport Terminal 4 Gallery Exhibit.

GERRY GROUT: PAINTER

"My art is born more from a sense of touch than from sight. Drawing from a model or object before me is like climbing a mountain as opposed to viewing it from afar ....I need to feel I have touched the solid form."
A native of Arizona, Gerry Grout came from a ranching family that moved to the West in 1909. Interested in the visual arts since childhood, she earned her first prize at the age of 1 0 with a painting of sunlight highlighting Arizona boulders. She is motivated by the solidity and linear quality of natural forms and prefers to paint in series. She is currently concentrating on her fifth series that involves flora and plant forms.
Gerry is a life member of the Arizona Artists Guild Hall of Fame and a juried member of the Arizona Watercolor Association. She has won jurors' Best of Show and numerous choice awards. She is the author of a book titled Linear Images of the Living Figure. The book includes 60 drawings of nude figures, many of which are used as references for figurative paintings. Her images have been featured in many national art publications.
Gerry has served as a docent and member of the Director's Circle at the Phoenix Art Museum. She was a Board and Founders Circle Member of the West Valley Fine Arts Council and Chairman of the Arizona Artists Guild's Scholarship Program. Gerry provides an annual scholarship to encourage the continuation of college art students. She was a volunteer art teacher at a Juvenile Correctional Center, a member of the West Valley Arts Council Building Campaign and a member of the recently completed Arizona Artist Guild building project.
