Bisbee Rolling Art Transport Society (B.R.A.T.S.)

Here is an invitation extended to the Sculpture Group from the B.R.A.T.S. (Bisbee Rolling Art Tranpsort Society). Come to Bisbee and get out of the extreme heat for the 4th of July and see these wonderfully creative art car creations roll down Main Street! It will take place during the parade on Main Street. The event is a historical nod to the annual coaster races and integrates the Arts community that Bisbee is well-known for. The coaster races have been run since the 1920s, and used to begin at the top of the Mule Mountains . . . needless to say, many grown men were injured and even killed coasting down the winding road at break-neck speeds. Today's coaster races are really more like a parade. The B.R.A.T.S. havve been around for the last 3 years, and interject a lot of fun into the coaster races. See some of the coasters from last year in the video below:

Poe and Andrew (the two artists that organize the annual event) wish to have participation from Phoenix artists. Perhaps the Sculpture Group can build a B.R.A.T.S. car for next year's race . . . what do you think? Or, it would be great if individual artists each built cars too. The carts are basic (not built for speed), most with pedal mechanisms that start and stop like bikes. They encourage repurposing materials, and have a $250 spending limit per car. Should you not want to build your own frame, the B.R.A.T.S. have frames that can be rented for $100. Also, they are working on getting a studio that is accessible for others to work on/make last-minute fixes to Art Cars prior to the event for next year.  "Like" the B.R.A.T.S. on Facebook for the most up-to-date info. You can also call/e-mail me (Heather Green 602.430.2390 or heathergreenstudios@gmail.com) to get info on how to contact the B.R.A.T.S.

In the meantime, there are lots of great places to stay in Bisbee. I just took a tour of Gym Club Suites (the old YMCA) -- they offer suites for around $100/night (each has a full kitchen, lofts, great views of Bisbee from windows and decks, etc.). Canyon Rose Suites is also a nice place to stay (above my studio, in the same building). Click on the links and/or go to http://www.discoverbisbee.com/ for more info. The Bisbee Enclave has great info on their weekly calendar for events around town too. Regardless, if you are visiting Bisbee, please let me know, I'd love to meet up!  -- Heather

Upcoming Sculptors Group Field Trip

Fellow adventurers in the third dimension,

Mark your calendar now for a very special field trip in September. Mark Cohen has arranged for us to visit with sculptress Heloise Cristo at Taliesin on Saturday morning September 10.

Heloise Cristo, in addition to being a long-time member of Frank Lloyd Wright's close circle of friends, is an artistic national treasure, so this visit will be very special.

I hope you'll be able to join us.
